SMELL OF STORED MILK

Frozen human milk can smell different from fresh milk because an enzyme (lipase) begins to break down the fats. This is normal and helps protect the milk from bacteria once it is thawed. Despite common myths, there is no good evidence that babies will refuse milk because of this smell. Heating milk to "scald" it and stop lipase activity is not recommended, as it can damage important immune components in the milk.

HYGIENE IS KEY

Always use clean containers (single-use breastmilk storage bags are best) & wash hands with soap and water before expressing or pumping. These guidelines are for full-term & healthy babies.
