Medical Discovery in Action: SCIS Career Experience at Am-Sino Healthcare

Am-Sino International Women's Health & Birth Center attending physician, Dr. Jennifer demonstrated various procedures and showed students how to read an ultrasound image - recognizing the baby’s developing features and heartbeat.

Later, certified Birth Doula, Maggie, led the group into a real delivery room. She explained the thoughtful setup of the space, including comfort aids for laboring mothers and soothing sensory elements such as dim lighting and aromatherapy. Contrary to TV dramas, a labour room does not have to be cold or frightening. The students saw that a calm, home‑like environment can help a during the entire birth experience.

During a lab session, students tested their own blood by mixing it with A and B antigens. They observed clotting when different blood types met - the principle of codominance and antigen‑antibody reaction. 

Physical therapist Jo Zhou taught students how to prevent sports injuries and use simple self‑release techniques. 

In the Traditional Chinese Medicine session, Dr. Zhan introduced the principles of acupuncture and cupping. Students learned how inserting needles at specific points (such as Quchi, Waiguan, and Neiguan) can promote physical and mental benefits, and how cupping uses suction to stimulate blood flow - a fascinating encounter with ancient healing wisdom.

Morning Huddles: Safety through teamwork

Dr. Kelly Jia first guided students through the natural journey of childbirth, explaining the three stages of labour, how to recognize them, and how to prepare both physically and mentally for each phase. Then, using a device that mimics contractions, each student experienced a few minutes of simulated contractions. The grimaces and deep breaths that followed gave a new level of respect for their mothers! 

Dr. Michelle Lu-Ferguson, U.S. board-certified OB/GYN physician and Fellow of the American College of OB/GYN (FACOG) with over 30 years of clinical practice, introduced the role of an OB/GYN as a manager of women's health across all life stages - from puberty and reproductive health to menopause and beyond. She explained that while obstetrics cares for women and their babies during pregnancy and childbirth, managing pregnancy conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and genetic disorders, the scope of gynecology extends far beyond: hormone dynamics, Sexual Health, Fertility, breast cancer genetics, and more. The job is demanding and can be high-stress, but is deeply rewarding. The session gave students a holistic view of what it means to champion women‘s health.

Dr. Jane Lee, GP and Chief Medical Officer of Am‑Sino Dingxiang Medical Center, walked the students through the UK medical school application process: academic excellence, UCAT and BMAT exams, the personal statement, and multiple mini‑interviews. Real case studies helped them think like a doctor, not just an applicant.

Our clinical pharmacist explained how medications are categorized, checked, and dispensed - showing students that behind every prescription is a system of double-checks and safety protocols. Later, using rescussitation models, every student practiced chest compressions and rescue breaths, learning the basic steps to respond to a cardiac emergency. Both sessions offered quiet but essential lessons in patient care.
